The future of a host of technologies, ranging from lightweight fuel-efficient low-emission vehicles and jet engines to safer and effective hypersonic and nuclear capabilities, rests on our ability to design, discover, and develop advanced structural materials with desired properties and performance metrics. This calls for revolutionary advancements in the field of structural materials using advanced processing and manufacturing techniques that can control nano and microscale features, high-resolution material characterization techniques, small-scale &in-situtesting techniques, and large-scale modeling & simulation capabilities. A team of materials science and engineering researchers employ a range of advanced tools – including high-performance research computing, a suite of additive and advanced material manufacturing techniques, state-of-the-art testing techniques, and high-resolution microscopes – to model, manipulate, characterize and visualize new advanced structural materials.
