Overview
About the International Research Experiences for Students (IRES) Project
This international internship opportunity is funded by theIRES NSF program, which contributes to addressing the knowledge gaps of the entering industrial workforce by imparting world-class research skills in smart manufacturing and artificial intelligence (AI) to diverse groups of U.S. engineering students through international cohort experiences. It aims to provide students with hands-on skills in state-of-the-art industry-scale machines and platforms. The project will also broaden professional networks, deepen the relationships of a diverse student cohort with the industry and introduce students to international practices in innovation and technology development.
The IRES project site will be hosted at Arts et Métiers, the Grande École of Technology at Aix en Provence, France. It offers a summer-long research experience and internship program for a diverse cohort of students who are focusing on smart manufacturing and AI for the emerging industrial era.
Dr. Satish Bukkapatnam and Dr. Mohamed El Mansori currently co-lead theAM² transatlantic partnershipbetween Texas A&M University Engineering and Arts et Métiers. The IRES NSF program is a very competitive grant and will support the research collaborations of this partnership. Dr. Bukkapatnam and Dr. El Mansori have initiated a consortium with the industry in Europe focused on smart manufacturing and AI, and in leveraging these efforts, four broad project themes have been identified to provide world-class research internship experiences to students. Every project will require the student group to engage the industry partner (e.g., Airbus, Essilor, Sateco, Total) to advance the theory and methods of AI/data science and address a specific challenge in an emerging manufacturing platform (e.g., 3-D printing, rapid casting, sustainable machining). Besides providing hands-on experiences with unique industry-scale testbeds at the host location, the project will feature a variety of innovative enrichment activities (e.g., Invent for the Planet) and interactions with the European industry.
This program offers a substantial stipend for selected students. Otherscholarships and financial aidare also available for international experiences.About the University
École Nationale Supérieure d’Arts et Métiers (ENSAM) was founded in 1780 and is a national engineering college that trains engineers to overcome industrial challenges through sustainable technologies. ENSAM is spread across eight campuses and three institutions, all within close proximity to the industrial sector. All of these locations focus on five major areas, which correspond to economic sectors and include transportation, energy, health, housing and production. ENSAM strives to maintain a connection between students’ coursework and research with current industry work, encouraging the development of future skills and knowledge expected by companies in today's industry.

Courses Offered
For Texas A&M Students:
To view the course requirements, click on the link below.
For summer, register for 0 credits. For fall, register for 1 credit.
For Non-Texas A&M Students:
The program is two parts: summer semester and fall semester. For the summer, you will be enrolled at Texas A&M for a 0-credit International Experience (ENGR 484). In the fall, even if you are not enrolled in your university, there will be deliverables to complete as part of the program. Deliverables that take place during the fall semester can be fulfilled via email and virtual meetings without disrupting the student's fall semester class requirements. The final deliverable as part of the program is a poster presentation, and while virtual participation is possible, in-person presentations are encouraged.
*Both Texas A&M students and non-Texas A&M students: The program administrators reserve the right to reduce or revoke stipend amount, and/or lower final course grade, and/or dismiss the participant from the program at any time should requirements and expectations not be met.
IRES Projects
Four IRES projects are carved out of the collaborative efforts under the AM2 partnership and each of these are carefully crafted to address a specific fundamental challenge in smart manufacturing and AI for Industry 4.0. Notably, each project will lead to specific sensing and AI/data science innovations to tackle a standing scientific challenge(s) in the emerging industrial practice of a particular manufacturing process. The table below outlines the four projects.
